Industry Luncheon A Hit With Delegates

MCA Toronto Members, Associate Members and Industry Partners gathered at the Crystal Fountain Banquet Hall on Jan. 16, 2008, for the annual Industry Luncheon.
The well-attended event commenced with a networking reception followed by lunch and entertainment provided by Mr. Simon B. Cotter. After achieving success as a real estate executive, Cotter set his sights on a new profession – comedy. Winner of “Canada’s Comedian of the Year” award, he was a surprise hit with the audience. A natural storyteller, Cotter delighted delegates with his razor-sharp wit and unique perception of life’s day-to-day occurrences and absurdities. During the reception, attendees had a chance to chat with friends and associates about the activities of 2007, and plan for a busy year ahead. Read more...

Rise in Building Costs Helps Propel Nine Month Building Permit Values to New All Time Record
ICI building permit values for the first nine months of 2007 totalled over $8.4 billion, surpassing the $7 billion 1989 peak for the first time.
The year started with one of the single biggest first quarters on record, topping $2.5 billion, up 52 per cent over the first quarter of 2006. The Gains were maintained through the second and third quarters of 2007 resulting in a 29 per cent increase over the first nine months of the year. All three sectors registered significant increases however, the industrial sector, recorded the most striking gain of 45 per cent over the same period in 2006. Institutional and commercial permits, also up significantly, recorded gains of 38 and 20 per cent, respectively. Read more...

Employer Fined $165,000 After Carbon Monoxide Poisoning
An employer was fined $165,000 after workers were overcome by carbon monoxide gas in a subway tunnel.
A crew, consisting of seven workers and a foreman, was removing man-made mineral-fibre material to permit access to the concrete for repair. Some of their equipment was on a flatbed subway car, and it included a gasoline-fuelled generator and two gasoline-fuelled power washers. Read more...
