The CRCA Turns Fifty!
The Canadian Roofing Contractors Association (CRCA) is by their own definition, “the national voice of the Roofing Industry in Canada”.  Established in the spring of 1958, the CRCA answered the roofers’ questions of the day; why have a roofers association?
During one of the formative meetings for the future CRCA, potential members asked; “Is it because we have some ideas or suggestions that we think other roofers should adopt?  Is it because we have a problem or some problems that we think other roofers might help us solve?  Are there things about running a business that we can learn through pooling ideas, and open discussion?  Could an Association accomplish things impossible with an individual?”
That meeting, in March of 1958, concluded with the following quote,” An Association would provide an opportunity for gatherings of people engaged in a similar occupation to meet on equal ground and, inspired by fellowship in their mutual endeavour, to indulge in a free exchange of ideas”; profound words for a bunch of roofers.
At that same meeting it was determined that the aims of this new Association would be: “to provide management with helpful information in planning for the success of their business, to provide helpful technical advise, to take action on industry problems, to keep members informed on all matters pertaining to roofing and allied fields, to be the voice in dealing with other organizations, government agencies, etc., and to standardize procedures, both in design, and in dealing with contractors, architects, etc.”
Ultimately, the CRCA held its inaugural meeting on May 30, 1958 at the Royal York Hotel in Toronto and as they say the rest is history.  Interesting though, how like everything else in the world today, roofing has become a very complex business.  For the CRCA though, and this applies to the OIRCA as well, our Association aims have changed very little.  I have just completed working on a new promotional brochure for the OIRCA and many of the concepts planted back then in 1958 are still very much a part of both our organizations’ DNA, and were included in that new pamphlet’s message.
Business and technical advice, dealing with industry issues, developing relationships with related construction trades and various government organizations and influencing roofing procedures and design is what both the CRCA and OIRCA are all about.
I would like to think that CRCA’s unique duality of membership structure has played an important role in this industry’s development over the years.  While each provincial roofing association operates with complete autonomy, CRCA has become the glue, which holds this diverse national industry together.  That national voice of theirs also means that the Canadian roofing industry is represented internationally, which includes a strong relationship with the National Roofing Contractors Association in the United States
