ON THE COVER:  Roof Revitalization keeps Inco plant open in Sudbury, Ontario
More than 50 workers employed on $7 million design/build contract
By Peter Kenter, Correspondent, Daily Commercial News and Construction Record
The Clarabelle Mill processing plant of Vale Inco separates nickel from copper concentrates to help increase the productivity of its Copper Cliff Smelter in Sudbury, Ont.
The company issued a request for bids on a combined roof demolition/replacement contract in 2007, with the understanding that the work wouldn’t interfere with processing plant operations.   Read more...

Green Roof By-law For The City Of Toronto
In December of 2008, Toronto City Council adopted the Toronto Green Standard (formerly know as the Toronto Green Development Standard).  The Toronto Green Standard (TGS) is a set of performance measures for sustainable development that responds to the City’s environmental concerns.
This new standard is about designing buildings and landscapes that is more environmentally friendly.  The City believes that achieving the targets set out in the TGS will help to improve air and water quality, reduce green house gas emissions and enhance the natural environment.   Read more...

The CRCA Turns Fifty!
The Canadian Roofing Contractors Association (CRCA) is by their own definition, “the national voice of the Roofing Industry in Canada”.  Established in the spring of 1958, the CRCA answered the roofers’ questions of the day; why have a roofers association?
During one of the formative meetings for the future CRCA, potential members asked; “Is it because we have some ideas or suggestions that we think other roofers should adopt?  Is it because we have a problem or some problems that we think other roofers might help us solve?  Are there things about running a business that we can learn through pooling ideas, and open discussion?  Could an Association accomplish things impossible with an individual?”   Read more...

CRCA Technical Bulletins
As the Canadian Roofing Contractors Association (CRCA) celebrates its 50th Anniversary in 2009 (see Inside the OIRCA elsewhere in this issue of the News), many readers may not be aware of the fact that our national roofing association regularly publishes Technical Bulletins.  Of course if you are regular reader of this publication you will know that we often re-print current bulletins as they are released.   Read more...

Wind-RCI:
New Internet Tool for Calculating Wind Design Loads for Roofs
NRC-IRC recently released an Internet-based tool that simplifies the calculation of roof wind loads, the first, critical step for designing mechanically attached membrane roofs.
Called Wind-RCI , the calculator is based on a six-step procedure developed by the Special Interest Group on Dynamic Evaluation of Roofing Systems (SIGDERS) and researchers from NRC-IRC. That procedure was designed to do calculations based on the National Building Code of Canada (NBC 2005) or the American Society of Civil Engineers guide (ASCE 7-05). While the procedure was an effective aid for calculating wind design loads, it was tedious and time consuming.   Read more...

Energy Rating of Roofing Assemblies: Research Partners Sought

While SIGDERS research has advanced understanding of the wind uplift performance of membrane roofs, NRC-IRC is seeking new partners to quantify air movement into this type of roof construction and to determine its impact on the overall energy performance of the roof.
Owing to the flexible and elastic nature of mechanically attached membrane roofs, wind can cause the membrane to balloon or flutter. This change in shape leads to volume change, creating negative or bubble pressure under the billowed membrane and thereby drawing conditioned interior air into the roof assembly. This is called air intrusion, which differs from air leakage (air movement from one environment to the other) that is common to wall assemblies. Damage from condensation and energy wastage are only some of the problems caused by air intrusion.   Read more...
Adhesive Applied Roofing Systems
To develop wind uplift standards for Adhesive Applied Low Slope Roofing Systems (AARS), a collaborative research and development project has been initiated with the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council.  Project partners are the Department of Civil Engineering University of Ottawa, National Research Council’s Institute for Research in Construction, Roofing Manufacturers: Bakor Inc., IKO Industries Ltd., Soprema Inc. and Tremco Inc. and the Roofing Contractors Association of British Columbia.   Read more...

City of Toronto Announces Eco-Roof Incentive Program
In an effort to support the City of Toronto’s Toronto Green Standard (see By-law article elsewhere in this issue), the Eco-Roof Incentive Program has been launched.  The City is now offering financial incentives for green roof and cool roof construction on industrial, commercial and institutional buildings.  The Eco-Roof program will provide up to $50 per square metre of green roof up to $100,000 and $2 to $5 per square metre of cool roof up to $50,000 for projects on existing buildings.  On a one-year pilot basis, the funding will also be available for green roofs on new buildings.   Read more... .
