MCAT Continues To Tackle Industry Issues

President's Message:

In recent months MCA Toronto has played a major role in presenting the negative aspects of Reverse Auction Bidding to owners in the Greater Toronto Area. In conjunction with our Industry Partners, we were successful in displaying the positive side of traditional bidding practices. MCA Toronto would like to thank the associations who participated in the dialogue with owners.

MCA Toronto’s Standard Practice Chairman, Al Prowse recently met with the National Trade Contractor Coalition of Canada to discuss the negative effect of Default Insurance currently being used by general contractors in Ontario. In this issue of the Pipeline, Steve Ness of the Surety Association addresses contractors’ concerns. On Oct. 26, the National Trade Contractors Coalition of Canada will be hosting a seminar in Toronto titled “Get paid, and Get Paid Promptly.”  More details are available on page eight of this issue.

On a positive note MCA Toronto man-hours have been very strong for the 2005/2006 year. Last year, the Treasurer recommended a budget based on 3,129,000 man-hours. I am pleased to report the actual man-hours for 2005/2006 are 3,610,950. We believe the construction forecast for the next several years in Greater Toronto Area will remain strong.

I would like to take this opportunity to extend congratulations to Michel Grenier, director of Canadian Affairs for the United Association of Journeymen and Apprentices of the Plumbing and Pipefitting Industry, who is retiring in January 2007. The MCA Toronto Board had the honour of attending Grenier’s Recognition Dinner held in Ottawa on Sat. May 6, 2006.

Grenier has been a dedicated friend to MCA contractors across Canada and we join them in wishing Grenier and his wife Suzanne all the best as they begin a new and exciting chapter in their lives.

Replacing Grenier as the new director of Canadian Affairs is John Talford, who was elected at the United Association’s 37th Annual Convention in Las Vegas. We would like to take this opportunity to wish Talford all the best as he assumes office in his new position.

Currently, MCA Toronto is busy putting the final touches on our Annual General Meeting being held Sep. 21 to 24 at the Sheraton-on-the-Falls in Niagara Falls, Ont. I am looking forward to seeing our Members, Associates and Industry Partners at this important event.
