CASMA Participates in Workshop on Enhanced Recovery of Roofing Materials

Natural Resources Canada has engaged the Canadian Construction Innovation Council (CCIC) to develop an implementation plan for increasing the recovery of end-of-life roofing materials. As part of an extensive consultation process with all concerned CCIC convened a workshop/conference in Toronto earlier this year, where the Canadian Asphalt Shingle Manufacturers’ Association (CASMA) was represented.

The overall objective of the conference was to develop a strategy to eliminate or at least reduce post consumer roofing waste from going to municipal dumps.

The workshops were designed to identify the changes needed and their impact (positive and negative) on the key stakeholders.

The conference was well attended by participants from Canada-wide government agencies and by consultants, environmentalists and other interested parties. Roofing manufacturers were well represented by various associations including CASMA.

Participants in the workshops showed a strong resolve to tackle this issue. CASMA and other roofing industry representatives were actively involved in providing information and ideas to other participants.

CCIC is spearheading this project and will formulate an action plan in the near future. CASMA is committed to support their effort.
