New Green Roof Waterproofing Course Being Launched

Green Roofs for Healthy Cities (GRHC) is pleased to announce the launch of Green Roof Infrastructure: Waterproofing and Drainage 301, the first of its kind in North America, representing the combined efforts of four industry associations working together to support its development.

“This course will help to ensure that designers and implementers of green roofs understand the special considerations involved with proper waterproofing systems,” said Stephen Teal, chairman of the Course Technical Committee, Flynn Canada. “Many clients are concerned about the potential for leaks, and this course directly addresses, and hopefully lays to rest, these concerns.”

“Proper waterproofing and drainage systems are critical elements of a green roof assembly and this new course will be a cornerstone of our (itals)Green Roof Professional Accreditation(enditals),” said Steven W. Peck, president, Green Roofs for Healthy Cities, the North American green roof industry association. “Since a green roof incorporates high quality waterproofing systems and provides protection for them from damage, green roof systems are less likely to cause the building owner problems.”

This third course was launched at the Green Roofs for Healthy Cities’ Fifth Annual International Greening Rooftops for Sustainable Communities Conference, Awards and Tradeshow, in Minneapolis, Minn., Apr. 29 to May 1, 2007.

Green roofs, or vegetated rooftops, address climate change by saving energy and cooling the urban heat island artificially high temperatures which increase energy consumption (one degree Celsius cooling = four per cent peak load demand reduction) and associated air quality issues such as smog and particulate matter.
