ON THE COVER: Beyond “Cool” and “Sustainable” to High-Performance Roofing
The Next Stage in Low-Slope Commercial Roofing
Cool roofing and sustainable (or “green”) roofing emerged as separate, but closely related, commercial roofing industry trends about 10 years ago. Today, both cool and sustainable roofing continue to gain momentum, and they are driving change in commercial roofing market dynamics, roof system design and manufacture, product innovation, industry initiatives, selection priorities, building codes and legislation. They are also sparking a considerable degree of discussion, disruption and controversy due to their ongoing impact on the commercial roofing industry. Read more...

Installation of Self-Adhering Membranes in Steep Slope Roofing
Self-adhering bituminous membranes have commonly been used in sloped (greater than 2:12) roofing for many years. When applied as an underlayment, they are primarily used to help prevent water entry from ice dams at the eave areas of shingled roofs in cold climates. In this application, they are typically installed from the eaves edge to the point at least 24 inches inside the exterior wall line of the building (most often the lower three to six feet of the eaves area), beneath the finished shingle layers. Always check local building codes to confirm eave protection requirements. The adhesive asphalt component effectively seals the membrane to itself, and around the shanks of nails used in overlying shingles, so that any water that is forced underneath the shingle layers by winds or ice dams does not reach the deck or attic space below. These self-adhesive underlayment membranes have also been used successfully in other “critical” roof situations such as part of a flashing system in valleys or around roof penetrations (skylights, vent stacks, etc.), and are commonly applied beneath roofing materials on lower-sloped (2:12 to 4:12) roofs. Green Roof Industry Grows by more than 25 per cent in 2006
With over 100 per cent growth in the Intensive, Green roof garden market segment
Green Roofs for Healthy Cities, the North American green roof industry association has announced the results of its second annual Industry Survey of corporate members’ completed green roof projects in 2006. The Survey indicates a growth rate of more than 25 per cent over 2005, representing more than three million square feet installed in 2006. For Intensive green roofs that typically incorporate larger plants, the growth rate was 110 per cent in 2006. “The green roof industry is growing rapidly in response to the pressing need for cleaner air, better storm water management, improved energy efficiency and more usable green space in our communities,” said Steven Peck, founder and president of Green Roofs for Healthy Cities. “Green roofs have really captured many people’s attention as a beautiful way to help fight climate change and save money. Green roofs deliver more public and private benefits than any other green building technology, so we anticipate that strong growth will continue into the future.” Read more...
Product Profile - Labour Saver
Makes Short Work of Tear-Off Projects
When Bryce McCandless of Watertight Roofing Services Ltd., was faced with a roof removal on a three-storey apartment complex in Kitchener, Ont., he used a particular product that would help him complete the job on-time and on budget. The 30,200 sq. foot, inverted roof consisted of gravel, four-inches of insulation, four-ply felt built-up roofing (pitch) on a concrete deck. Each building was approximately 110 tons of gravel on each building. “Gravel removal was key to ensuring this job came in on schedule,” McCandless said. “The Labour Saver (550 Roofer Special) saved us approximately two days of labour on each building – a total of four days. This is approximately an $8000 savings.” Read more...

Roofing Researchers to Develop New Test Protocol for Quantifying Air Leakage through Low-Slope Assemblies
Increasing demand for and the rising cost of energy have intensified interest in the issue of air leakage through the building envelope. However, until recently, the roof – in contrast to walls and windows – has not received much attention regarding its air-leakage performance. Being able to control air intrusion is critical in roofing design, as this has several effects on the performance of the roof – on wind uplift, energy consumption and moisture migration. Now, advances in roofing technology are providing greater opportunities to control air intrusion. But at present, there are no code requirements, standard specifications or test methods for the design or quantification of air-barrier performance in roofing assemblies. Read more...
