ON THE COVER: The Socio-Economic Burden of Hospital Acquired Infection
Excerpted from a report by the Public Health Laboratory Service, U.K.
At any one time approximately one in 10 patients in acute care hospitals have a hospital-acquired infection (HAI). At the same time, an unquantified number of patients, discharged from hospital into a long-term care facility or the community, have an infection related to their recent hospital admission. These infections impose a burden on the secondary, tertiary and primary healthcare sectors, community care services, the patients themselves and those who care for them. These burdens may be both financial and non-financial. Studies that have estimated the cost of HAI generally focus on the burden to the hospital sector. Little is known about the costs incurred by other sectors of public health services as listed above, the individual patients, their family and friends. These costs become increasingly relevant as the length of hospital stay becomes shorter and patients are discharged home at an earlier point in their recovery. The aim of this research was to provide a more comprehensive assessment of the nature, distribution and magnitude of the costs resulting from HAIs. Read more...

The Impact of A Pandemic
Most of us in the cleaning industry were forced to react and deal with the impact of SARS in our workplaces, customers and the various institutions we may have visited. SARS forced us to wash our hands more frequently, be careful around others and a host of other good health practices. Now we are faced with the threat of an influenza pandemic as a result of the H5N1 avian influenza. The avian influenza is actually the start of the virus as it primarily affects birds. Once this virus mutates to humans as a new virus and starts to spread, it becomes a pandemic.  Read more...

Green Cleaning Products: Cost Competitive, Cost Neutral or Just More Costly?
There has been a fundamental shift in thinking about the performance and cost of Green cleaning products over the past couple of decades. Historically, many of these products have been viewed as inferior in performance and costly when compared to their non-Green counterparts. Even as their performance improved, there was still considerable reluctance to use Green cleaning products due, for the most part, to the fact that their cost remained stubbornly high. This often caused building service contractors (BSCs) working in very cost-competitive markets, as well as end customers, to believe that transferring to environmentally preferable cleaning products would likely depress their profits, hurt their competitiveness, or both.  Read more...

Facing Challenges
By COLIN BUTTERFIELD, Group B Services Ltd
The Cleaning Industry turnover rate has always been higher than some of the more formally skilled occupations, and consequently the need for training programs that provide new and present employees with skills and knowledge has always existed. Brent Bourne, of Servitech Training Ltd. has been involved in the delivery of training courses for custodians since 1989 and through his college sponsored courses (Building Service Worker I, II, III, and many other topics), has trained literally thousands of individuals. Ten years ago he taught a Government sponsored course at a Community College to eleven developmentally challenged individuals on Vancouver Island. While the sponsorship wasn’t continued, Brent still learned that there was also a challenge and great personal satisfaction in teaching these individuals a skill that could, and did change their lives.  Read more...

Simply Clean and Safe
By MATT DEL VECCHIO, Vice President Foodservice, Avmor Group
As more and more Canadians are dining out, food safety control is increasingly becoming a concern for both consumers and the food industry. Though Canada’s food supply is one of the safest in the world, foodborne illnesses are nevertheless fairly common. Health Canada tracks outbreaks and publishes the statistics in its annual report “Foodborne and Waterborne Disease in Canada.”  It is estimated that for every case of foodborne disease reported, 350 cases go unreported. The report states that there are 2.2 million cases of people made sick by contaminated food in Canada, with up to one billion dollars being spent on medical support, lost income and associated expenses. Considering these significant costs, food safety is worthy of everyone’s attention, especially restaurant owners. Read more...

Uptight About Uprights? Solutions to Common Vacuuming Problems
Upright vacuums, like cars, vary in quality, features and performance. Like automobiles, some uprights are reliable, others may be problematic, while some become a problem as a result of neglect or improper use. How do you make an informed choice and, having done so, ensure your upright vacuum goes the distance? While a “road test” with a loaner unit makes sense, you’ll want to consider ‘under-the-hood’ facts and long-term issues such as soil removal and filtration testing, motor configuration, construction and design factors, durability, upkeep, manufacturer service and support policies, and overall cost of ownership.  Read more...
