ON THE COVER: Ontario Apprentices Lead In 2007 Nationals
Ontario apprentices made an impressive showing at the 32nd annual Canadian Sheet Metal Apprenticeship Competition held in Niagara Fall, July 19 to 22, winning second and third place. Anthony Potter (Rozell Inc.), who took first place in the provincial competition in 2006, captured second at the nationals, while Yasar Raja (Flynn Canada) took third after winning second place provincially. First place belongs to Casey Wilson (Associated Sheet Metal) hailing from Victoria B.C. Overall, ten apprentices from across Canada competed in the event organized by the Sheet Metal Workers Canadian Council. Read more...
Official Launch Heralds New Era In Training
As Chris Bentley, Minister of Training, Colleges and Universities, wielded tin snips, cleaving the steel ribbon at the official opening of the Provincial Sheet Metal Training Centre on June 25, 2007, he officially heralded in a new era in apprentice training in the sheet metal industry in Ontario. The state of the art facility located in Oakville is jointly sponsored by the Ontario Sheet Metal and Air Handling Group (OSM) and the Ontario Sheet Metal Workers’ & Roofers’ conference and managed by a board made up of the two groups, equally represented. Before he addressed the crowd, Mr. Bentley insisted that the group of apprentices in attendance, members of the Centre’s first class, join him at the front of the gathering. Read more...
Scholarship Winner A Born Leader
Allison Arsenault, 2007 winner of the Wally McIntosh Memorial Scholarship, has just finished up a successful first term in the concurrent education program at Queen’s University, Kingston. Majoring in math with a minor in art history, she will earn a Bachelor of Arts degree along with a Bachelor of Education and is already planning a career in elementary education. The daughter of Rob Arsenault E.S. Fox Limited vice president and chief financial officer, Allison scored the highest average of ten other applicants with 94.5.
In keeping with the conditions of the $1000 scholarship qualifications, she also exhibited an impressive profile of community service, clearly demonstrates stellar leadership qualities and those of a first-rate citizen. Read more...

Quebec City Welcoming Convention Site
OSM broke new territory for its annual convention, June 7 to 10, travelling to Canada’s Quebec City, whose history dates back to the 16th century. Delegates, based at the Loews Le Concorde Hotel were immediately charmed, giving themselves over to the unique site, high above the St. Lawrence River. A visit to Quebec City is the closest thing marked by a distinctive European flavour – wrought iron flower boxes dotting the exterior of heritage buildings, open air patio-style cafés - enhanced by the magnificent architecture in Lower Town, one of the oldest cities in North America. While French is the predominant language, OSM participants were delighted to find that English speakers were warmly welcomed and accommodated. Read more...
Waterloo-Wellington's Unique Personality
There are a number of conditions that set the Waterloo-Wellington Sheet Metal Association apart from other sheet metal associations in the province. Firstly, it has no central office, instead, association president Mike Dietrich handles association business from Rozell Inc., his own company. Handling organizational matters this way allows the association to run on a tight budget. As Dietrich explains, “We have a breakfast meeting once a month to stay on top of developments and a retired member looks after the bookkeeping.” Read more...
